Depict! assignment

BTEC media level 3 Depict! Assignment Type of Production Our type of production was a Depict! 90 second short film that was put on the official East Norfolk sixth form college YouTube channel. There are many different types of moving image productions, there are tv soaps, feature length movies, web series, short films any many more. For our production we were put into groups of 4 to work with and come up with an idea for our 90 second short film, the group I worked with was George, Ruth and Helen, we came up with the idea that our film would take place around a mysterious door, music would be heard from the door so the main character would investigate the door to find out that it sends him back to a 1950s Ney York style card game. Requirements Our finance for the film was extremely low budget, the only prop we had to pay for were a pack of playing cards that cost £1.20, everything else we used in the production was either borrowed or own, for example the outfits we wore for the production already belonged to us, and the cameras were borrowed, we also didn’t have to pay for a set because we filmed inside our college, if this was a major Hollywood movie, millions would be spent on cameras, props, sets and outfits for the cast to wear, this is the same for all mainstream media productions, they will have to spend loads of money on actors wages, props, sets, and all of the people working behind the scenes, however the overall budget will not be as high for other moving image productions like tv programmes, online series, Netflix shows. The finances is also linked with the time management of productions, this is because if they run over on the time, they will still have to be paying everyone on and off set, this is how a lot of productions go over budget. Time We had about a month altogether to finish our production altogether, we had a week for pre-production, a week for filming and about 2 weeks for the editing process, I think we used our time well because we managed to finish the entire production in time. In other moving image productions, the time for the entire production can take ages, some can even take over a year all together, the filming will take a very long time as they need to get everything right, this means there will be plenty of retakes of certain scenes, this is what happened with us for our Depict! Production, when we were filming the card game scene we had to do a lot of retakes, if this happens in the professional media industry, it costs the production company a lot of money, when they go over schedule reshooting scenes, they still have to pay for all the personnel that is just sat there doing nothing until they are needed, people like makeup artists will just be sat there waiting for the filming to be back up to speed, sometimes it isn’t the peoples fault that they are behind schedule with the filming, say they are filming on an outside set, and there is heavy rain and they cannot film, this will hinder the time they have to film and this will put them behind, however all of the people that were there to film on that day will still need to be payed and this will affect the finances, this is how a lot of moving image productions go over budget. Finance Finances for moving image productions come in many different forms, when people are making a large scale production, they can get the money for the film from crowd funding, this is when people can donate small amounts of money to the film, altogether this money builds up and can actually pay for the movie altogether. Another option is that they can get sponsors or investors to put money into the film, for example, when a big money marvel film comes out, an investor may put £10 million into the film with the intent to make 20% from it, all of the money that is invested will be put into the finances of the film, it isn’t just large scale productions that get money however, with the film Clerks, Kevin Smith had to fund the film himself only using credit cards to fund the movie. Product placement is another way the film can make money, this is when companies pay a movie to use their products in the film, for example in James Bond Casino Royale, there is a lot of Sony Placement, another one that appears in films quite a lot is coca cola. With short films a method of funding is by crowd funding, this is when the director can ask for money from people to help fund the film, the director can add incentives for doing this by adding people’s names to the credits for donating a certain amount or letting the people star in the film as an extra etc. Personnel ] The personnel for moving image productions vary depending on the scale of the production, for example a Hollywood blockbuster would consist of a massive team because of the film they are trying to make, they will need producers, production managers, production coordinators, production assistants for all of the higher end parts of the production, obviously they will need all of the people working behind the scenes like the camera men and women, the makeup artists, and obviously the actors. All of these people have important roles, for example the producer will be the one that raises money for the film, he works with the writer to improve the script and works with the director to pick actors for the roles and gets key crew members like the production designers and camera people, composers and editors. For tv shows, there are many differences in the types of personnel needed than for a low budget short film, a tv show will need a casting director for starters, this is the person that picks the people he wants to cast for the show, also a lot of the time, in tv shows, they have a different director for different episodes, an example of this is in Band of Brothers they have a different director for every episode. A lot of the time with tv shows as well is that each episodes consist of a different writer each week. Obviously television show personnel still has a lot of the same people in it as a low budget movie like camera people and make up artist but obviously the people that are employed to work on tv shows will be of a more professional standard. With Hollywood feature films, the personnel again is on the most the same, the difference again is that these people will be highly qualified I what they do, the actors will be very famous, and the crew behind the scenes will be very high standard. Facilities and equipment For moving image productions, the equipment needed to make them can be very expensive, so a lot of the time instead of buying them, film makers just rent them to make there productions, this is a cheaper alternative than actually buying the equipment for the production. For our Depict! Production, we borrowed the camera equipment from the college so we didn’t have to pay, but if we wanted to make a low budget short film we would have to find somewhere nearby to try and rent some cameras, I managed to find a website called www.hireacamera.com where you can actually order a camera kit and they deliver it nationally, I found multiple cameras for hire that we could use if we were interested in making a low budget short film, the lowest being from £35 to £117. Materials There are plenty of things needed to make professional moving image productions, props are very important in any form media production because if the actors are running around without them, the film isn’t going to look very good, things like props can be rented out relatively cheaply, this means the director wont have to spend a large amount of the films budget on this. The editing software is also very important for moving image productions because once all the filming is done, they will need to edit it all in post production, if they are without the editing software then this isn’t possible. Contributors There are many different ways people can contribute towards moving image productions, one way for Hollywood movies is the producer, this is the person that invests his money into the film to fund the budget, this is one of the main ways that large scale films are funded for, another example is for low budget productions is Clerks, this was funded by Kevin Smith himself, he used his own money and took out a lot of credit cards to pay for this movie, this method proved successful for him as it put him on the map as a filmmaker, he used the shop he worked at at the time as his location so it was a very low budget film but its still considered a cult classic. Another example of contribution is film charities, there are hundreds of these about that provide money for filmmakers so they are able to fund their productions. Locations For our Depict! Production, we filmed in the college, we asked our teacher if we could film in the room we used and he said it was all good so that’s how we managed to film our short film without needing any location releases. Location releases would have been needed however if we were to film in somewhere like a shop, or someone’s house, you don’t need a location release for every place you film though, for the Blair Witch Project, the whole film was shot in the woods, this is a public area so they wouldn’t of needed to get any location releases for this unless they filmed on privately owned land, in this case they would of needed the land owners permission. For our Depict! Production we picked the two locations we used to film because in pre production, our story was about a character called Clarence hearing music come from a mysterious door and then he proceeds to walk through the door into a room with an underground card game taking place, we felt that the two locations we used (outside the drama studio and the room opposite the media room) were perfect for our story. We did a risk assessment for both locations but there wasn’t really too much to note apart from a few cables on the floor that was a possible trip hazard. Legal issues We didn’t face really any legal issues with our Depict! production but there were a lot of things we had to look out for like copyright with the music we used in our production, so we had to find music that not only fitted the production but was free to use, if we were to use copyrighted sounds or music, we would have to get permission to use it, which given our circumstances in the classroom would be pretty difficult. Copyright is a legal right created by the law of a country that enables the creator to have the work to have exclusive rights for its use and distribution. Copyrights are considered territorial rights, this means they do not extend beyond the territory of a specific jurisdiction. Copyright jurisdiction recognize copyright limitations, allowing fair use to the creators work, this means they can use the work of the creator or are given certain rights to use it, a lot of the time the creator often has him/her name in the credits of a production if they do this.

Depict! dodgy deal evaluation

the dodgy deal evaluation

Overall I think this production went well, there are many things that we could have improved, like planning our pre-production a bit better, we had to improvise with a few of our scenes and redo some of the storyboard to fit the scenes, we followed the script well and nearly all of the lines were perfect apart from a few that we improvised. We also planned to film in the drama studio but we couldn’t get it so we had to use w16 instead.
The filming process went well, we followed the storyboard well, we only a few scenes we had to redo on the storyboard. I played Clarence in the production, I walked through a mysterious door to the 1950s. in the pre-production I wrote the script and helped George with the shot list, this enabled us to know exactly what our lines were with each shot as we worked together on this task. Ruth did not appear in the production as she was behind the camera.

The editing process was mainly done by Helen with the rest of us behind her talking to her about what type of effects we thought would suit the production, the only real problem we had during editing was the fact that it was hard to hear some of our voices over the music so in some parts of the production the music volume is decreased dramatically for the voices to be heard. Overall I think this production was a success, obviously there were many things we could improve on but these are things we know to address in our next production.
